The American Otological Society's September 23 Women in Medicine tribute revisits the people who shaped its membership and leadership. AOS dates its first invitation to a woman Associate Member, Dorothy Wolff, PhD, to 1961 and LaVonne Bergstrom's admission as its first woman Full Member to 1977.
The society identifies A. Julianna Gulya as its first woman president in 2001. It also highlights the presidencies of Debara L. Tucci in 2016, Carol A. Bauer in 2019, Sujana S. Chandrasekhar in 2024 and Nancy M. Young in 2025. These are historical roles, not new appointments this week.
AOS also recognizes Shirley Gossard's executive administration from 1996 to 2012 and says Kristen Bordignon, who has worked with the society since 2004, now serves as lead Executive Administrator. The society says Andrea Vambutas joined its Council in 2026 and is slated for its presidency in 2032.
The retrospective documents leadership and operational service that can disappear from a clinical-news-only view of the specialty. Its dates matter: the new item is the tribute, while most roles it describes are historical.
