The University of Nebraska Medical Center's Advanced Endoscopic Sinus & Ventral Skull Base Surgery Course brought otolaryngology and neurosurgery residents and fellows to the Davis Global Center for expert-led instruction and hands-on simulation, according to a September 25 institutional report. UNMC describes the course as recently held but gives no exact event date.
This year's course added a virtual-reality view of skull-base anatomy. UNMC says the experience let trainees examine three-dimensional relationships among nerves, vessels, bone and other structures; a photo caption identifies iEXCEL headsets in use. The report identifies Christie Barnes, MD, as an otolaryngologist involved in the course.
The announcement describes the format and technology. It does not report measured improvements in surgical skills, transfer to clinical practice or patient outcomes.
The course shows how two surgical specialties are using the same simulation setting for complex anatomy. Whether that experience improves training or care requires evidence beyond this announcement.
