Nine undergraduates from USC and other universities joined the Keck School of Medicine's six-week Hearing and Communication Neuroscience Summer Research Academy in 2026, according to a September 22 campus report. For the first time, every participant received a stipend.

USC says its students received support from the Hearing and Communications Neuroscience Training Program and the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program. Support for students from other universities came from several sources, including a National Institutes of Health grant based at Johns Hopkins University and funds from the USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.

The students worked in laboratories, explored career paths spanning research and clinical fields, and presented their summer projects at the end of July. The report documents one cohort; it does not establish a national workforce trend or the program's long-term career effects.

WHY WE’RE FOLLOWING IT / EDITORIAL CONTEXT

Funding every student is a specific program choice for ENT research leaders to examine as they recruit undergraduates. USC has not reported whether it changed participation or later career paths.
