An ENT service area and a wastewater monitoring catchment are different geographic descriptions. CDC says wastewater is collected as a combined community sample, rather than from an individual or household. A surveillance line therefore needs its sampling context before it becomes local background.

CDC’s limitations identify a geographic gap: most jurisdictions report municipal systems in urban and suburban areas. Communities using septic systems, or in rural areas, might not participate. A state label does not by itself establish that every resident is represented.

The connection to healthcare use is also different. CDC says wastewater monitoring does not depend on people visiting a doctor or obtaining a test. A wastewater signal therefore should not be described as a count of patients seeking care.

Public display has additional boundaries. CDC excludes data with known quality problems and, unless the local jurisdiction approves, data from sewersheds serving fewer than 3,000 people, institution-specific locations and tribal communities. Missing public data cannot, by itself, establish no viral activity.

These references were observed October 16, 2026. Both pages carry Published labels of April 10; their Updated and Reviewed labels are August 21 for methodology and September 25 for the overview. These are page dates, not a sampling week. No current activity estimate or site-median finding is reported.
